General Guidelines

SUBMISSIONS ARE CURRENTLY OPEN UNTIL AUGUST 1ST.

We only accept submissions via our online submission manager. Submissions sent via email will be deleted unread. Click on the appropriate links below to submit your prose, poetry, or artwork.

SUBMIT HERE

Please submit up to three short prose pieces, no longer than 750 words a piece, or 5-7 poems in one document. We do not require a biography or cover letter. We will accept submissions of previously published material, as long as you let us know where it appeared and as long as it has been more than a year since the original publication date. Please allow up to 90 days for response, though we plan to respond much sooner. Report your submissions and rejections or acceptances to Duotrope's Digest. Upon acceptance, writers will receive free online access to the journal and will be able to purchase print copies at a discounted rate.

We ask for first North American publishing rights. Rights revert to author upon publication. By submitting, you accept that your work may be used or archived on our website as well as in subsequent print or electronic anthologies. If you have artwork, feel free to query at stonehighwayreview@gmail.com.

Submit Prose

If your fiction is more poetry than prose, then submit here. We want language-focused prose. We're looking for prose pieces that are evocative, thought-provoking, and have beautiful language. We like surreal, slipstream -- in other words, genre bending works, in addition to more traditional short prose. We like the gothic tone, but please no werewolf/vampire themes. We prefer shorter works, up to 750 words. We are pretty strict on this word limit. Please send us both fiction and nonfiction with the understanding that we prefer language over story. There is no need for a determined beginning, middle, and end. We want the different and the unusual, using showing language rather than telling the reader how to think, feel, etc.  Hybrid work, experimental and innovative work is of interest. We stray away from work that includes violence toward women or children and other groups of people. We are VERY picky about the prose we accept and urge you to read an issue or two before submitting.

Submit Poetry

Simply put, we are looking for poetry that moves us through specific language, through original images, and that pays attention to each individual line. We want poems that linger, that leave us in wonder.  Great poetry should make you have to catch your breath after reading it and that's exactly what we're wanting to find. We prefer shorter works (2 pages or less) but will consider longer pieces. We want work that relies on images, rather than rant poetry, and we don't tend to publish rhyming poetry - it's simply not of our personal tastes. Be sure to submit multiple poems so we can get a sense of your work.

Questions? Queries? Email us at stonehighwayreview@gmail.com. Don't send us your poetry or prose submission here, though, as it will be deleted unread.
Be sure to report your submission to Duotrope.
